Furniture Upholstery Fabric Selection at a Glance

Different furniture applications have different performance requirements. Use this quick guide as a starting point for fabric selection.

What Should Furniture Buyers Check When Selecting Upholstery Fabric?

Beyond appearance, these performance factors ensure long-term value and customer satisfaction.

Abrasion Resistance

Measures how well fabric withstands repeated surface wear.

Breathability

Influences sitting comfort, especially during longer use.

Pilling Resistance

Helps maintain a clean appearance during long-term use.

Seam Performance

Helps prevent seam opening and fabric failure around stitching.

Colour Fastness

Evaluates resistance to fading and colour transfer.

Batch Consistency

Reduces colour variation between production orders.

Stain Resistance

Important for dining, hospitality and family furniture.

Cleaning Compatibility

Ensures stability under recommended cleaning methods.

How Much Martindale DoesUpholstery Fabric Need?

The right Martindale rating depends on the application and expected level of use.

Higher Martindale does not automatically mean a better fabric. It must be balanced with comfort, aesthetics and application needs.

Upholstery Fabric Comparison for Furniture Buyers

Different upholstery materials perform differently in durability, cleaning, breathability and market positioning. Use this comparison as a starting point for furniture sourcing.

Color Fastness Evaluation

To preserve aesthetic longevity, our fabrics undergo rigorous color fastness assessments, including dry and wet rub testing as well as exposure to simulated UV light. These tests confirm that colors remain stable, vibrant, and resistant to transfer or fading over time—a key requirement for brand consistency and customer satisfaction.

Martindale Abrasion Resistance Test

To evaluate durability, we utilize the Martindale abrasion tester—an industry-standard device that replicates prolonged wear through controlled, repetitive motion. Fabrics are required to withstand a minimum of 20,000 cycles to qualify for production. This ensures resistance to pilling, fraying, and surface deterioration, even in high-traffic commercial or hospitality settings.

Water Resistance Performance Test

To evaluate water resistance, water is applied directly to the fabric surface under controlled conditions. The test allows us to observe how effectively droplets remain on the surface rather than being quickly absorbed into the material. This helps assess fabric suitability for dining chairs, family furniture, and other applications where accidental spills and easy maintenance are important.

Fabric Breathability Evaluation

To evaluate breathability, controlled airflow is directed upward through the fabric sample. The movement of lightweight balls above the fabric provides a clear visual indication of how readily air can pass through the material. This helps us compare airflow performance between fabrics and assess their suitability for seating applications where long-term comfort and ventilation are important.
